Day 109 (15th October) Saint Petersburg to Peterhof

A not particularly rewarding day; we stayed in the room until midday when we had to leave, and spent three hours fighting our way through the traffic of Saint Petersburg to Pushkin where the Catherine Palace, built for Catherine the Great, is located. All the big tourist sites close for one day a week, and Catherine Palace closes on Wednesdays. It was Wednesday, and we did think about spending the night in Pushkin to see the unique and utterly mesmerising Amber Room in the Palace the next day, but couldn’t face the thought of wasting a day simply killing time. So we set off for Peterhof and spent the night in a small car park on the eastern edge of the grounds of Peter the Great’s Summer Palace.
