Day 124 (30th October) Groznyi to Verkhnyi Lars

We stayed at the hotel until the chucking-out time of midday and then drove to the border past Vladikavkaz (where we got lost) ad reached the border with Georgia at Verkhnyi Lars about 4 pm. Getting through the border was a doddle. On the Russian side, the two border staff who helped us were utterly charming and they didn’t want to see our compulsory 30-day insurance which we bought in May and had, obviously, run out. A grumpy man on the Georgian side wanted to see my driving licence which was in my wallet in Jennifer’s handbag and, as a passenger, she had to go through a separate part of the building. After running around looking for her, I got my wallet back and then suffered a huge panic when I realised my driving licence was missing. I then remembered it was in the front compartment of the van and we got through passport control without being shouted at by the huge queue which had built up behind the van.
