Driving south through Yunnan Province, the landscape became almost sub-tropical with densely forested mountains with terraces of maize and rice and plantations of bananas and other fruits. A long drive took us to the country of the Hani people where their rice terraces have been turned into a tourist attraction. We got a big discount on the tickets because a landslide had closed the road to one of the main attractions, but the ones we saw were stunning.
We stayed in a youth hostel where we had an excellent evening meal and, for the first time in months, had a cup of freshly-ground coffee. Although Yunnan is a major centre of tea production, it is also starting to grow coffee.
