I was taken by the hotel manager to a garage in the new town because I was worried about a clunking sound in the back of the vehicle, which seemed to have cured itself. Maybe it is something rolling around. However the garages were shut as this was Sunday. I went to get a photo taken for the Pakistan visa in a little shop opposite the Kalta Minor tower, which was started in 1851 but never finished. Lunch was a disaster at the Terrassa; six waiters couldn’t cope with serving 3 tables because the spent all their time fiddling with their phones, so after waiting 30 minutes to get a menu we got up and walked out. I have put a suitably scathing report on tripadvisor. We decided to skip lunch and did some sightseeing. The hotel advised us to go to the Ayvon restaurant and we had a delicious meal with excellent service and I have given it 5 on tripadvisor. In the evening we went to see the Juma Mosque which has numerous wooden pillars, some of which are the originals from the 10th century. There was a concert of Uzbek folk music in the Kunya Ark, which had been the Khan’s palace in the 17th and 18th centuries. There is a dungeon from which felons were taken and thrown off the tower. They were seldom killed outright, but were badly maimed and finally expired after days of agony.
