After a delicious breakfast, we set off for the airport from the metro and had to ask the service centre for tickets to the airport. “Which airport” we were asked and, after showing him the tickets, learned that the plane left from the new Daxing airport, 29 miles south of central Beijing. We too the metro to near the end of the pink line and got the “Airport Express” conventional train. Completed in 2019 and known by plane spotters as the “Starfish” because of it shape, Daxing is the world’s biggest single-building airport and is the hub for “Sky Team”, a consortium of 19 large airlines including Air France, Virgin Atlantic and China Southern. Although the ticket was booked with Qatar Airlines, our plane was operated by XiamenAir of Xiamen in southern China. We got to Doha at 24.00 (Beijing time) and Birmingham at 06.00 (London time) after travelling for 13 hours.
