Day 119, 23rd September, Shilin

In the morning, Jim and I went to see the Golden Temple, but weren’t too sure where to go because it was early in the morning and there were no big crowds to follow. On the way down we met Jennifer who had decided to come after all, so I went back with her and found the most interesting parts. Taoist believers were making unearthly sounds like wolves, some were doing kung fu mves and one girl was shaking with her arms going up and down.
We decided to save money on the tolls by taking the country road from Kunming to Shilin. It was a misery, only small patches with a good surface. We were held up for 17 minutes in a traffic jam and then for a shorter time due to an overturned lorry. We eventually got to the town of Shilin which means “stone forest” and went to see the interesting rock formations with the path culminating in a pavilion on top of a large rock giving an excellent view of the stone forest.
