Two non-eventful days. After getting the metro to the enormous Hongqiao mainline station we got the high-speed train to Hong Kong, which passed some lovely scenery of small villages with 2-3-storey white houses with red or purple roofs surrounded by a patchwork of small fields and irrigational channels. Closer to Shanghai there was more water than dry land with fish farms indicated by fountains pumping aerated water into the pond and other pools with strange lines of sticks sticking out of them, And enormous paddy fields either full of water, or with the latest crop of green shots standing out of the water, or cleared of rice and water and simply a brown mess. There were also frequent small bonfires of burning rice stalks. The train stopped at huge million-plus cities such as Suzhou, Hangzhou and Ganzhou before getting into Kowloon at 10 pm and we took ages to get out of the station. Hong Kong still purports to be a semi-independent country so we had to go through numerous passport control and customs barriers before arriving at a line of taxis. We asked the driver to take us to the nearest hotel and he dropped us at the Prince on the Kowloon waterfront which was expensive by our standards but quite cheap by Hong Kong standards. We were lucky to get a bed.
The next day was a disaster as I ate something for breakfast which disagreed with me and I spent a day suffering from a violent attack of the shits and pewks before recovering sufficiently for a splendid dinner in the evening. The pics show sights from the train to Hong Kong
