Day 104, September 8th, Linze

We got up early in the morning and drove to a fruit and vege market in Jiayuguan city to stock up with food. We then drove to the first watch tower of the Great Wall, which signifies its westernmost end. It looks just like a lump of rock and the original un-renovated Great Wall is underwhelming, about four feet high and unlikely to stop anybody. More a line in the sand than a serious barrier to invasion. However the museum was very good with a history of the Great Wall including photos taken at the beginning of the 19th century compared with modern photos.
We then drove through dreary semi-desert and frequent oases. The Bullet Train was seen speeding past too quickly for a photo to be taken. We arrived at Linze near Zhangye in the early afternoon which gave us three hours to take a bus through the Geological Museum with the most beautiful multi-coloured rocks, spoiled only by the presence of thousands of tourists. We had dinner cooked by Jennifer in the car park of the Museum and slept here for the night.
