The hotel got a taxi to take us to Guilin City Station and we booked tickets for Nanning. Unfortunately a man across the railway carriage aisle was snooking loudly for the entire 2-hour journey which was disgusting and rather ruined the ride. Apart from the Guilin-type conical hills, the countryside was similar to that since we left Inner Mongolia with small villages surrounded by patchworks of tiny fields with a variety of crops as well as rice paddies. There were also forests of “Bamboo Trees” with long slender trunks, looking like silver birch but a light grey colour. As we approached Nanning, the vegetation became thicker and more jungle-like. Nanning is not a tourist town, even the people at the information desk couldn’t speak a word of English, but they did find an 18-year-old boy who found us the Geli Hotel in the station complex where we got a room for £19.
